If you connect both computers to the router via ethernet the file transfer should be fairly quick. (Actually, the entire Documents folder might be shared by default, you'd have to check.) Then I can go to the new computer, connect to the old one through the Homegroup, and just copy the files over.
And with Windows I can set up all my computers to the same Homegroup and then go into my Sims 3 folder on the old computer and share it to the Homegroup. (Note: My computer is at home, not a school or work location.) I can easily connect several computers to the router. I'm connected to the internet through a router. How are you connected to the internet? And what is your OS? I don't know if this will apply to your situation but this is what I would do: Once they've been installed move them out to another folder for later use if needed.
Also, if you have a lot of content to install through the launcher, it is best to only have the files currently being installed in the downloads folder. These Sims will be available in CAS when you make a new sim. SavedSims folder if it has any sims in it. You don't have to put them on your new computer. Or just to keep a back up of them externally might be a good idea. To get them into the new installation on the new computer they need to be installed through the launcher as if they are CC.
